Landcatch
was conceived in the late 1970s by Sir William Lithgow (industrialist
and farmer) when he was planning to replace his 1919 river-based
hydro electricity-generating scheme at his estate
in the West Highlands of Scotland.
The new
scheme was commissioned in 1981 and was designed to integrate
the generation of hydro-electricity with the production of
Atlantic salmon broodstock and juveniles. The freshwater used
for each purpose is piped down from a hill reservoir located
over 4 kilometres away from the fish farm, which is powered
by the home-produced electricity. The water supply alone would
maintain a city of 150,000 people!
The production
of Atlantic salmon broodstock and juveniles comes under the
auspices of Landcatch Ltd. Landcatch is part of the Lithgow
Group of companies which established an international reputation
as one of the world’s foremost shipbuilders. The group’s
traditions of innovative technological development, advanced
engineering together with Landcatch’s expertise in salmonid
reproductive biology and husbandry have allowed the company
to successfully realise the potential of harnessing the local
natural resources in a manner sympathetic to the local environment.
